“Per tutta la sua
vita John Cage
ha scritto pezzi per pianoforte. Ha inventato il "piano
preparato", per cui è più famoso, ma ha anche scritto per piano
"non preparato", in modo sia tradizionale che non
tradizionale. I suoi lavori più recenti utilizzano tecniche di feroce
complicazione e virtuosismo, al limite estremo delle possibilità
dell'esecutore. Inizialmente egli ha usato le estensioni elettroniche,
le tecniche casuali e la collaborazione dell'esecutore in maniere
complesse. La sua musica pianistica iniziale era scritta per essere
suonata da se stesso e molta di essa era pensata per
"accompagnare" esibizioni di danza moderna. Il piano di Cage,
preparato e non, ebbe funzione di orchestra per un nuovo genere di danza
solista moderna e per alcune delle più grandi figure della moderna
danza Americana."
Questa registrazione di Four Walls proviene dalle
rappresentazioni dal vivo di Joshua Pierce e della ballerina/coreografa
Sin Cha Hong tenutesi al Seoul NYMAX Festival ed all'Anthology Film
Archive's Courthouse Theater di New York City il 27 e 28 ottobre 1994,
che hanno segnato il cinquantesimo anniversario dell'opera stessa.
L'idea di estendere questo album ad un doppio CD è venuta come
risultante della brillante e rivelatoria esecuzione di Pierce dell'opera
magna del compositore: le Sonatas and Interludes
registrate dal vivo al Microthon Festival svoltosi alla New York
University il 23 maggio 1999, che ha segnato il venticinquesimo
anniversario dell'associazione di del pianista con la musica di Cage ed
in particolare con le Sonatas and Interludes.
Una
speciale caratteristica di questa "summa" del lavoro di Joshua
Pierce sulla musica per pianoforte del primo Cage, riguarda la
presenza di due composizioni, mai precedentemente incise: il
Prelude (Piano Sextet) for Six Instruments in A minor, del 1946 e
le Three Early Songs, del 1933.
Un libretto di 56 pagine
in tre lingue (italiano, inglese e francese) che include fotografie,
note critiche di Eric Salzman, un saggio di Michele Porzio ed estese
note biografiche sugli esecutori, completa questa edizione in doppio CD,
confezionato in multipack jewel
box.
Questo doppio CD rappresenta una grande occasione per
avvicinarsi, al più alto livello, ai primi capolavori pianistici
del più grande ed influente compositore del 20° secolo, qui
splendidamente eseguiti da uno dei più dedicati e ben conosciuti
interpreti della sua musica.

“John Cage wrote for keyboards throughout most of his life. Most
famously, he invented the so-called "prepared piano" but he
also wrote for unprepared piano in both traditional and untraditional
ways. His later piano works employ an almost ferocious complication and
virtuosity at the outer limits of performer possibility. Earlier he used
electronic extensions, chance and performer collaboration in complex
ways. His early keyboard music was written for himself to play, much of
it meant to "accompany" modern dance performances. Cage's
piano, prepared and unprepared, was the orchestra for a whole genre of
solo dance performance by some of the greatest figures of modern
American dance.”
This recording of Four Walls grew out of live
performances by Joshua Pierce and dancer/choreographer Sin Cha Hong at
the Seoul NYMAX Festival and Anthology Film Archive's Courthouse Theater
in New York City on October 27 and 28, 1994, marking the work's fiftieth
anniversary. Plans to extend this album as a double CD came about as a
result of Mr. Pierce's brilliant and relevatory performance of the
composer's magnum opus: Sonatas and Interludes recorded
"live" at the Microthon Festival held at New York University
on May 23, 1999, marking his twenty-fifth anniversary of live
performances and his association with the music of John Cage, and in
particular, Sonatas and Interludes.
A very special feature of this summation of Pierce's
work with the piano music of John Cage, is the presence of two compositions
here recorded for the very first time: the Prelude
(Piano Sextet) for Six Instruments in A minor, from 1946 and
the Three Early Songs, from 1933.
The 56-pages three languages booklet (english, italian and french) including photographs,
liner notes by Eric Salzman, essay by Michele Porzio and extensive
biographical notes of the performers, completes this double CD edition
packaged in multipack jewel box.
This release represent a great occasion to approach, at the highest
level, the early piano masterpieces of
the 20th century most important and influential composer, uniquely
performed by one of he’s most dedicated and well known interpreters.
